The School of Government at Shenzhen University was established in September 2021, formed from the former Department of Public Administration of the Management School, the Sociology Department of the Law School, and the Urban Governance Research Institute. It is the first school in Southern China named specifically for "Government ". The school is structured into four departments: Administrative Management, Public Policy, Political Science, and Sociology. It offers undergraduate programs in Administrative Management and Sociology, master's programs in the primary disciplines of Public Administration and Political Science, professional master's degrees in Public Administration (MPA) and Social Work (MSW), and a doctoral program in the secondary discipline of Political Communication.
The Department of Administrative Management, established in 1985 (originally named the Department of Administration), was among the first in China to introduce this discipline. It is recognized as a national first-class undergraduate program construction site, a Guangdong provincial feature specialty, and a key discipline. The Sociology Department was founded in 1996 and in 2007 established the nation's first university-affiliated social work organization, developing distinct advantages in social governance, social policy, social work, and big data and computational social sciences. The Urban Governance Research Institute, formed in 2016 from the integration of the Shenzhen University Institute of Contemporary Chinese Politics established in 1999 and other research entities, was renamed in 2022 to the Research Institute of Governance in Mega-Cities and also established the Political Science Department. The "Contemporary Chinese Politics Research Report" initiated in 2002 is one of the earliest academic journals with a focus on contemporary Chinese politics, widely influential in political and administrative circles domestically and internationally, and is included in collections of renowned universities such as Harvard and Oxford. The Public Policy Department was newly established in 2023.
