School Introduction

Established in September 2021, the School of Government was formed by merging the former Public Administration Department of the Management College, the Sociology Department of the Law College, and the Institute of Urban Governance. It is the first college in South China named “School of Government”. The school comprises four departments: Public Administration Department, Public Policy Department, Political Science Department, and Sociology Department. It offers undergraduate programs in Public Administration and Sociology, master’s programs in the first-level disciplines of Public Administration and Political Science, professional master’s degrees in Public Administration (MPA) and Social Work (MSW), and doctoral programs in Social Work and Political Communication (second-level discipline).

Public Administration Department: Founded in 1985 (originally the Department of Administrative Studies), it is one of the earliest such programs in China. It is a national first-class undergraduate program, a Guangdong Province characteristic program, and a key discipline. Sociology Department: Established in 1996, it launched the first university-backed social work agency in China in 2007, excelling in social governance, social policy, social work, and big data/computational social sciences. Institute of Urban Governance: Reorganized in 2016 (renamed the Institute of Global Megacity Governance in 2022, with the Political Science Department established), it builds on the 1999-founded Institute of Contemporary Chinese Politics. Its Contemporary Chinese Political Research Report, launched in 2002, is a pioneering academic journal on contemporary Chinese politics, widely influential and collected by libraries at Harvard, Oxford, and other top universities. Public Policy Department: Newly established in 2023.
