On March 18, 2026, the Guangdong Federation of Social Sciences and Humanities announced the results of the review for new social science think tanks in Guangdong Province. The Institute of Global Mega-City Governance, Shenzhen University was successfully selected as one of the new key social sciences think tanks in Guangdong Province.
The selection process for new social science think tanks was launched in April 2025. After comprehensive evaluation by an expert panel of factors including foundational capacity, research outputs, social influence, and effectiveness of cooperation with the provincial federation, 10 high-end think tanks and 20 key think tanks were selected.
This successful selection marks high provincial recognition of the Institute’s overall strength in think tank development, research capability, and decision-making consulting services. In the future, the Institute will closely align with national major strategies and the central tasks of the provincial Party committee and government, strengthen forward-looking and strategic research, continue to produce more landmark and high-level outcomes, and further enhance its exemplary and leading role.


Institutional Profile:
Founded in September 2022, the Institute of Global Mega-City Governance, Shenzhen University, evolved from the university’s Institute of Urban Governance, a relatively independent research entity established in September 2016. It is China’s earliest specialized research institution dedicated to global megacity governance studies. In 2022, the Institute was selected as a Guangdong Provincial Social Sciences Popularization Base. In 2023, it settled in Qianhai as a new-type think tank with Chinese characteristics and was designated a key humanities and social sciences research base in Shenzhen. In 2024, it was included in the China Think Tank Index (CTTI) sources. In 2025, it was recognized as an AMI Think Tank in the China Think Tank Comprehensive Evaluation Research Project (2025) and as a “CTTI 2025 Think Tank Construction Demonstration Case.”
